I can't add much to the post above but many times a sax player or two can double of clarinet or flute. It's really not too much of a stretch to get kids porficient enough from sax on on of those instruments.

Most Jazz arrangements don't require flute or clarinet but there are a number of them that do. I have never seen a Jazz band piece that called for piccolo, it has always been flute. Not saying piccolo is never used, I've just never come across it.

I've noticed that many of the younger band pieces now come with Flute and clarinet parts that double the saxes. I haven't used them, but am considering opening up jazz band to those players on a permanment basis.

I often transpose the alto 1 part for flute and add it the second time through a repeated section. Nice timbre change, especially on ballads.

If you have a good band, you'll find yourself limited on literature possibilities if the saxes can't double on flute or clarinet. Many of the Essentially Ellington charts have clarinet parts.
Also, I noticed Bass Guitar on the list. At the high school level, I require any bass player considering a spot in the top band or combo that they learn the upright. I also provide a lesson teacher for them.
