I've always had the idea that band should be taught from an intelligence-based approach. That is to say, better performance through knowledge and intelligence. I've been experimenting with different techniques in teaching and lessons. I'd be interested to know what everyone's thoughts are.
One such lesson is a weekly listening lesson. Each lesson focuses on a different topic. We've studied tonality, texture, different styles of music (marches, English folk songs, etc.). I give the students a worksheet with information and questions they need to fill out when listening to the various musical selections being used to illustrate a certain topic. The main point is that if we continue to listen to the music we're attempting to perform and try to understand and be able to discuss in an intelligent manner the details of the music we're listening to, we'd be able to better perform the music in front of us and assess our performance.
My students don't necessarily look forward to these lessons, but in every class there are lessons that aren't fun but certainly beneficial.
Thoughts?

I teach at an Arts magnet program 6 - 12 grades. It is no wonder to those that work in the school, why our school leads the district and competes very well state-wide on the standardized tests annually. Engaging in arts is an intellectual process if taught well. There is a science, a math, a democracy and a spirit to all art forms. It is up to the art teacher to help reveal this to students, which becomes the "thing" that attracts most to a lifelong enjoyment of the arts. I try to teach to each of these areas everyday, for instance talking about the physics of sound, helping students through interval identification, making points on balance and part roll, and finally helping students understand the reasons a particular composer wrote what she did. I applaud your efforts!
