Hello

What do you do when you need a substitute for band and orchestra or general music classes on the middle school level? I have used videos with worksheets with varying levels of success.
I'm reluctant to have the students take out their instruments since some look at it as an opportunity to switch instruments and thereby create general mayhem.

Ask your district if they have any music substitutes. Many subs put specific interests on the form they fill out for the district for this reason - so they can teach to their strengths.

Yeah, it really depends if you have someone that can teach the band or not. I substitute taught for 3 years in NY and all the local music teachers had me first on their list because I could actually run a rehearsal. They would leave me a note letting me know where they were in learning the songs and let me choose what I did with them in rehearsal. However, now I am teaching full time and in a location that really does not have many subs, especially no one that has a background in music the kids end up just going to a study hall, mainly because it is easier for the admin to do that then to pay for a sub that only has to cover three periods. If the students had to come to rehearsal I would have them work on worksheets that are related to what they are doing in band. If they've been really good I might play a music related video like BLAST! If the sub doesn't know anything about music I would not let them run a rehearsal, mainly because they have no clue what they are doing. I had to sub multiple times for advanced math courses and things like physics and they expected me to teach it..lol, it was interesting to say the least :P
