I am a freshmen in college studying to be a band director. I am wondering if I should take education classes too or just music classes as well as core classes?

You should talk with your college advisor. Only they can tell you the specifics of your program. If you are not taking any general ed courses ie. child psych, I am not sure you could get certified to teach in most states.

DEFINATELY take courses in education! There are a couple reasons I say this:
First of all, you are an educator when a band director. While many education courses do not apply (even though many have to take them) there are a lot of things that you will learn just about how to deal with students and how to deal with situations
Also, it opens doors. We all know music is the first to go...but if you have more of an education background, maybe they keep you on board as a band director (or assistant) because you can also teach a computer class.
There are GREAT musicians who are GREAT band directors...there are also GREAT musicians who are HORRIBLE band directors. Like wise, there are average musicians who become great band directors because they have more than music on their side.
