I have a student who only plays electric guitar. What should I have him do, especially when we get ready for contest?

is the kid not willing to learn a different instrument? Assuming he can read music (I know, you said guitarist, but since he is in band class I was thinking MAYBE he could) could you let him play some aux. percussion things?

I agree with Jumberg on using your electric guitar player on aux percussion during contest.

Have you considered putting him with a small group like maybe a 3 to 4 part combo to perform a pop/jazz number on school concerts?

For full band pieces - is there a section in your band in the treble clef range that needs more sound. He could play their part to reinforce their sound depending on how well he reads single notes.

If he is more of a chord type player, then how about using him to strum chords during pop type concert pieces then back to aux percussion during traditional concert band literature.
