I have applied for a position where there is only 1 student in the marching band. The school REALLY wants to create a good band/music program. I'm wanting to go into the interview prepared with ideas. I have some but I was hoping to get some views/opinions on other ideas as well? My current ideas are as follows:
1) Open a beginner class for all students
2) have the local Kappa Kappa Psi chapter (which I am an Alumni of) start a free lessons program to catch students up faster and help them learn in a one-on-one setting
3) ask for musicians from the local university to volunteer (with free pizza) for a basketball pep band as an example of good musicians
4) once a band program has been built, perform concerts for younger students in the district, as well as have the younger students perform for the older ones to foster an encouraging music atmosphere
5) use a trip to Disney World in spring 2013 to perform with one of the Disney instrumental workshops as a recruiting tool (with certain circumstances deciding which students go, such as participation in concert band and marching band, etc)
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks everyone!
Ashley

I have a blog dedicated to this. I started it a few years ago when I went into a similar program. There's a few people following it and it provides a lot of info. on what I did to build numbers and quality. It has been a very successful few years so far! www.rebuildingtheband.blogspot.com.
Good luck to you! I hope this helps.
